Spirits
There are two kinds of spirits: Ghasts and Elementals.
Both are affected by silver.
Ghasts / Ghosts
Ghasts are undead spirits. There are two kinds of Ghasts: Wights and Wraiths.
Wights
Wights are human ghosts. They are typically not malicious (unless they were malicious in life), and are trapped in a cycle or unresolved loop.
Wraiths
Wraiths are malicious ghasts. There are three main types: Spectres, Banshees, and Shades.
Spectres
Spectres are chaotic or loose malevolent forces. Spectres are sometimes confused for Djinn.
Banshees
Banshees are revenge spirits. They are sometimes a former human who seeks retribution from those who wronged them in life.
Shades
A Shade is a kind of wraith that once was a wight and has been mutated or distorted into an angry incorporeal soul trapped in this world.
Shades can be created from accidents or mistakes, and Shades that are deliberately created to be wielded for some dark purpose are called Fettershades.
Shades attack most often at night.
Silver or pith can be used to harm or fend off shades.
Fettershade
What's needed to create a Fettershade:
- A binding ritual that includes physical object they once owned (e.g. a bracelet, a letter, or their own unburied remains).
- An altar, left intact.
- An unresolved or unfulfilled duty, determined by the summoner.
A fettershade is unbound from their anchor to the mundane world when either:
- Their set duty is fulfilled, or
- The ritual and altar are destroyed.
This does not automatically get rid of the wraith: The fettershade is unaware of their unbinding until they are destroyed or told.
