Relationships
No one makes it in this world alone.
When creating a relationship, decide the other person's name, the nature of your relationship, your obligations within it, and the status of it.
Then, if the relationship is with an NPC, give them an Expertise of your choice that seems appropriate.
Obligations
An obligation is the need of your relationship. It is an an ongoing or unresolved expectation.
For each relationship, decide the obligation.
Either:
- you need something from the other,
- the other needs something from you,
- both of you need something from someone else, or
- someone else needs something from both of you.
Obligations often involve one or more of: an object, a location, or another person.
Status
The status of your relationship reflects its dynamic.
Choose an intensity and a nature below, or write your own.
| INTENSITY | NATURE |
|---|---|
| Deep | Affection |
| Complex | Friendship |
| Growing | Curiosity |
| Subtle | Doubts |
| Playful | Respect |
| Tense | Rivalry |
Example
Relationship:
Protégé of Viscount Fabi de Rosso
Their Expertise:
Consort (Persuasion)
Obligation:
Count Rosso sponsors me as long as I keep him appraised of the movements of my father, the Duke.
Status:
Tense respect / indebted
Bonds
Bonds are the relationships you've made with the other PCs.
Make at least one bond that explains your shared history with another PC.
Work with the other players to create relationships that make sense within the fiction— they don't need to be symmetrical, or equal in number or type.
A bond is a relationship, so work with the other player to decide the obligations within it and the status of that relationship. The status doesn't have to be reciprocal (your tense doubts is their playful rivalry).
